Breast Cancer Recurrence: Agonizing Trauma For Females

by Stephan Grindley

Breast cancer is a serious disease which claims the lives of millions of women every year from all over the world. Breast cancer not only causes suffering, debility, and sometimes death, but also attacks one of the very signs of feminism. Women who must undergo mastectomy in order to save their lives often feel traumatized as a feature of their femininity is lost. A breast cancer recurrence may necessitate removal of the breast.

Due to the persistence of the negative effects of cancer cells on the immunity of cells of the body, relapse should not be regarded as an abnormality. Body cells will still be susceptible to a return of the cancerous infection even after a recovery period. The most common time frame for any recurrence is within three to five years from the first medication.

The most usual forms of cancer may be treated if they are diagnosed in their early stages. This is just as true of breast cancer. Early diagnosis will ensure that the right treatment is given to prevent the spread of malignancy and to avoid recurrence. Frequently, nuclear medicine is given along with strong antibiotics to rid the body of cancerous cells.

Breast caner recurrence can be avoided if women remain diligent in their search for the same symptoms they had originally. Surprisingly, women who have been treated for breast cancer often do not notice when the same symptoms they had originally occur again. Sadly, this can result in a recurrence that is more severe than the original infection.

You should check your breasts regularly and see that there is no lump of hardened fatty tissue in the breasts. If you had undertaken radiation treatment for the breast cancer in the past also and again you notice such lump in that breast then it is a case of breast cancer recurrence. You need to see your oncologist immediately.

From time to time, your oncologist might want you to undergo a battery of tests after your initial diagnosis of breast cancer. This will help ensure that recurrence of the breast cancer is not likely. In general these tests will include a physical examination by a gynecologist, and a mammogram.

It is imperative that women of all ages stay up to date with breast cancer recurrence and what responses are available should they be diagnosed, due to the fact that women both young and old are susceptible. If you notice unusual hardening of fatty tissue in any breast, it is a cause for alarm. If the hardened tissue is in the same breast that was previously administered radiation treatment, seek immediate help. However, since there are many symptoms which may point to breast cancer, you should check with your doctor for confirmation and have a mammogram.
