Why Children Should Try Soap Making
Children will need a lot of activities wherein they could express themselves in different ways. It will greatly help in their development and learning as compared to just watching television most of the time. By doing things such as arts and crafts, they can have something productive to do as they are also learning at the same time.
The usual arts and crafts activities include painting or drawing. Others may also include woodworking especially for older kids. But if your child is tired of doing all of these usual activities, you may try suggesting soap making as a new hobby that they may try. This is a lot more interesting hobby and it may keep them busy for long periods of time.
In soap making, you will first need to make your most basic type of soap before you can add designs to this mixture. You can start from scratch and make soap from oil and lye. This method is not recommended for children as lye is a very corrosive substance and it can cause serious injuries if one is not careful. Glycerin soap is a better option when children are making soap.
Glycerin soap first needs to be melted before it can be used for designing. This can be done in a pan, or by simply putting it in the microwave. When your soap is in liquid form, you may proceed to adding dyes, fragrance oils and other ingredients that you can think of to help make your soap more appealing.
Once this is done, you can pour you mixture onto molds so that they can take shape while they harden. You may make personalized molds, or mix to soaps together in a mold to come up with ingenious designs. Suggest other ways to improve your child's design so that they may be able to try different techniques in making their soap.
Another idea is by sculpting your soap in a way that you like. This is useful if your mold is not good enough for you, or if you want to add a personalized touch to your soap. Do this when your soap is semi-hard so that it won't be too hard to manipulate the mixture. Just be sure that you supervise your child especially if they are using knives in sculpting the soap.
The finished product will be great as a decoration in your bathroom, especially if you and your child made really excellent designs. You may also show these off to friends and relatives and even give them out as gifts. If your designs are not very good or if you made a mistake, this can still be used in the bathroom when taking as shower thus no mistakes will go to waste.
As you can see, soap making is a fun hobby to do that will also stimulate your child's mind and helping him develop. It is also very practical as it can be used afterwards especially if the design that your child made is not very good and he doesn't want to display it. This way, he can continue practicing his technique until he gets the hang of it, without any rejected final product going to waste.
